Toddington Rovers FC Adults Side NHCSFL Division 2 CHAMPIONS - Well Done Lads Sam Childs 26 (22 league, 4 cup) Chris Vardy 14 (11 league, 3 cup) Mashudul Kabir 11 (8 league, 3 cup) Keith Clarry 6 (4 league, 2 cup) Thomas Miller 4 (3 league, 1 cup) Stevie McGory 3 (3 league) Dean Ayles 3 (2 league, 1 cup) Brian Fraser 2 (2 league) Chris Golding 2 (1 league, 1 cup) Ben Bradley 1 (1 cup) Glen Hains 1 (1 league) Lee Redmond 1 (1 league)
The team was originally set up under the name Houghton Wanderers where the team won the Luton South Beds League. The team then seeking higher challenges moved to the North Home Counties Sunday football League; the strongest league in the area. They had to start in the lowest tier; division four, being a new team but it was evident from the start that they were too strong for this division. They won the league at a canter and surprisingly were only promoted one division. The team also in this time due to the strong links of members of the management team and squad members with Toddington Rovers FC decided to move the team over to become Toddington Rovers, recognising the improved facilities, structure and organisation Toddington offered. In division 3 they again started very brightly and the team was again universally recognised as the strongest team in the division. They led the league from almost start to finish before amazing bad luck and poor form in vital games towards the end of the season handed the title to their rivals. An example of this form is the results of two games within four days, against their title rivals Black Swan. On the Sunday of this week they recorded an incredible 8 v 0 away victory against their rivals, only to lose 5 v 1 at home in a game that would have virtually won the title the following Thursday; just four days later with virtually the same team. They were then given another chance to win the league as their rivals slipped up against a Aldwyck side who only had ten men and were situated near the bottom of the table. But this chance was spurned and the title was lost as they lost 3 v 2. Terrible defending and goalkeeping howlers handed them their three goals, and a terrible lifeless performance from many of the team’s pre Madonna’s let this opportunity slip. Toddington finished second this year to Stopsley common who although were a good team were comprehensively beaten 6 v 2 and 3 v 0, in both league games by Toddington. This season they were again promoted only one division due to their poor ending to the last season and headed for the challenge of division 2. There was a massive turnaround of players and the team was caught very short the first game of the season losing 6 v 3 to Magnum. Many of the players had never played together before this game and it showed with virtually everyone having an off day, although again the result was determined as much by bad luck as ineptitude. 3 of the goals were goalkeeping errors, 2 were the result of very poor defending of ‘Rory Delayesk’ throws, and 1 down to a blatant offside that wasn’t spotted by our own linesman. Since then apart from one hiccup against Woodstock (a 2 v 2 draw) the team has won every game very convincingly, gaining revenge over Magnum; with an 8 v 0 victory, in the process. The team currently sit top of the league and have won the league with two games remaining, they have won promotion for the 4th season in a row, winning the league in three out of the last four seasons. The team has a very young mix of players with the elderly statesmen of the team; not including Peter Redmond’s occasional appearance in the team, being about 23. They try to play a good brand of football with the ball kept on the floor, and also have a lot of steel throughout the team for such a young side. |
