Saturday 12th June - Dads V Lads Match
Sunday 16th May Match Report by PETER HILL Flamstead v TRFC. It was wet, cold and windy……..it must be Sunday morning and a Toddington fixture! Congratulations at this point to parents and supporters who turned up to give the boys lots of vocal support with 30 odd of us there even though nothing was riding on the result. Our opposition are Flamstead who had given us some of our more competitive football this season but after the results over the past few weeks could now only finish second in the league. We happily welcomed back Connor into the squad after his injury and he was captain for the day. He cleverly won the toss and we kicked up a generous slope in the first half as we had the week before when we won the league. Back came Flamstead with several dangerous breaks and crosses but we still kept creating chances. After some lovely build up play through midfield Harry shot just wide and a clearance from Mark found Keenan on the left and he raced through only to find the keeper with his shot. Our second goal came from Harry who swept home a fanatastic shot from outside the box as the ball was played to him from the right on 25 mins. It was at this point that I think the opposition felt the best form of defence was attack as most of their best efforts were being created by their keeper who was based well outside his box. After 32 minutes Nicks free kick on the edge of our box found Tom on the right wing and he took full advantage when he saw the keeper out of his goal and shot from the half way line into an empty net - simply stunning finish !! As halftime neared the competitive edge had diminished and there was still time for Sam to shoot just wide from the edge of the box. The oppositions line up changed for the second half with the emphasis on attack. It was obvious we were going to win but by how many. Actually I think we did very well to keep the score down to just 11 goals. The second half goal scorers were Tom 3 ( Total 4 ), Harry 2 ( Total 3 ), Jack Walsh 1, Gianni, Nick and even an unusual own goal from Keenan . Final score 11 – 3 to Toddington. The fixture was played in the best of spirit by both teams, all the players were able to relax, have some fun and provide some great entertainment for the crowd. So we won the league ( by 12 points ), scored over 100 goals and also had the best defensive record in the league. Well done boys!!! At this stage I would also thank Steve, Richard and John for their time and effort to give the boys ( and parents ) a chance to enjoy themselves and experience the highs and lows of football. From a personnal point of view I would like to thank the boys, parents and managers for giving Nick and myself such a great 2 years with Toddington. It has very nice watching the boys develop as a group and as a team with great sportsmanship and commitment and a sense of fun ( most of the time anyway.) When I was playing we played against the likes of John Barnes, Brian and Marc Stein, the Morgan twins and even the great Jimmy Greaves. I can hardly remember anything about those events but the last 2 years have given me so many memories that are all so fresh. Sam ‘s dribbling at Caldecote on the last day of the season and Dan’s goal bound shot as the full time whistle blew last year. Then there was Dan’s last ditch tackle to deny a goal at the Glebe during a very tight match last year and last week when Max came on as a sub and chipped a perfect pass over the defence to Gianni to seal our league victory. Just a few of some champagne moments to back up the skill and effort shown by the whole squad. Thanks Peter Hill
Wednesday 12 May With 5 of the boys unavailable today we had a squad of 13 for the top of the table clash with local rivals, Houghton Regis.
Rovers continued their quest for back to back promotions with a hard fought win at Leighton United on Wednesday evening in a match which for a long time was much closer than the 6 -1 scoreline suggests. In Nick's absence, we welcomed back Harry Lousely to the team & he marked his comeback with a goal. Unfortunately, this also coincided with the return of freezing cold weather which left most of the spectators shivering.
Steve's team to start the match was: Jack S, Max, Tom, Daniel, Jordan, Ryan, Harry, Simon, Liam, Keenan & Gianni. The subs were Edward, Sam, Mark & Jack W.
Rovers started strongly & our first chance came when Keenan robbed a Leighton defender only for the ball to be cleared. This was followed by a succession of Toddington throw ins from both sides of the pitch which kept the home side penned in their own half, but ultimately led to nothing. Leighton then broke for their first attack of the match & it looked like one of their strikers might be played in before the ball was kicked into touch. Play then moved up the other end &, after a good build up down the left from Tom & Keenan, the ball found its way to Harry in the penalty area. He sliped the ball to Gianni who stroked it past the keeper to make it 1-0 to Toddington.
Keenan caused problems for the home team all night with his strong running & tricky feet & soon after he broke down the right hand side & crossed for Tom who shot just over the bar. The home side tried to mount an attack of their own, but Ryan calmly dealt with the through ball & Toddington went on to force another succession of throw ins down the right hand side. From one of these Liam put in a dangerous cross for Tom, but he was unable to convert at the far post.
Rovers were dominating possession at this point & it seemed only a matter of time before we would go further ahead. A good throw from Harry put in Keenan on the left & he cut inside only to shoot wide. Liam then put in a couple of great corners from the right but the ball eluded everyone on each occasion. Lovely play between Simon & Harry put Gianni through, but the home keeper saved as he was bearing down on goal. Moments later a ball over the top put Gianni through again, but this time he shot wide. Liam also put a shot wide before Steve made his first substitutions with Mark & Edward coming on for Max & Tom.
Slowly but surely, Leighton fought their way back into the match & started to make some chances of their own. They won a lot more balls in the middle as the match became scrappy & a break down the left forced Jack's first save of the match. After an optimistic penalty shout, Steve brought on Jack W for Keenan, but the home side continued to press & a richochet bounced kindly to one of their forwards who had a clear shot on goal. However, Jack S pulled off a wonderful save to push the ball over the bar & the resulting corner was cleared.
Toddington attacked again & Jack W sent Gianni away only for the ball to bounce wide. Sam then came on for Daniel before a throw on the right found Jack W. He passed to Gianni who this time made no mistake & blasted the ball past the keeper to make it score his own & the team's second goal just before half time. 2-0 to Toddington.
Half-time: Leighton United B 0 Toddington Rovers B 2
With the exception of Sam for Daniel, Steve reverted to the starting line up for the second half & almost immediately Liam put a ball over the top for Keenan. He held off a defender to shoot past the keeper via a post for a deserved goal. 3-0 to Toddington.
Leighton launched a counter attack down the right, but Jack S comfortably gathered. Another good throw from Liam then put in Gianni only for the ball to be cleared. Jordan fired a looping shot just over the bar as Rovers pressed & the home keeper saved from Simon after he was played in by Gianni. Jack S again had to be alert to come out quickly to collect another through ball before play switched up the other end. A great corner from Gianni created panic in Leighton's penalty area, but two Rovers players were unable to apply the finishing touch & another chance went begging.
The home side then counter attacked down the right, but their forward was unable to control the final ball. Soon after a Leighton player was through again, but Jack S saved at the second attempt. They were made to pay moments later when a cross from the left was poked in at the the far past byTom following good work by Gianni & Simon. 4-0 to Toddington & Tom's first ever goal in a competitive match for Rovers- well done Tom!
Keenan almost scored again after a great piece of individual skill on the right before Edward & Dan came back on for Liam & Harry. Gianni then somehow managed to hit the bar from Tom's corner when he was virtually standing under it & Keenan had another shot saved after a long ball in.
At the other end, Leighton forced a corner which was only cleared to the edge of the area & Jack S made a great save from the resulting shot. Mark & Jack W came back on for Sam & Max & good play from Edward then put in Keenan who shot just wide. Liam & Harry returned to the fray in place of Simon & Gianni & we forced two corners. The first one was cleared to Daniel whose looping ball back in hit the bar, but from the next one the ball fell to Harry & he stabbed it past the keeper. 5-0 to Toddington & welcome back Harry.
The Leighton number 7 was a good player & his pass inside to a team mate on the edge of the area produced another save from Jack S. Their number 14 then dribbled through our defence only to shoot over. Rovers did the same following good work from Edward, Keenan & Tom before Liam played in a lovely pass to Tom who cut inside the defender & scored his second goal of the game. 6-0 to Toddington & the best move of the match.
The light was starting to fade fast & in the gathering gloom a Leighton player beat the offside trap to score a deserved consolation goal with virtually the last kick of the match. 6-1 to Toddington.
Full-time: Leighton United B 1 Toddington Rovers B 6
Although it was a convincing win in the end, Rovers were never at the their best & the result slightly flattered us. Liam & Keenan played well & Jack W made some fine passes. However, Steve awarded the Man of the Match trophy to Jack S who made several good saves to keep us in front.
Our run of games against fellow top-of-the-table teams continued, this time against a Houghton Regis team unbeaten since November and who had risen to second in the table. We suffered our only league defeat of the season so far against them, albeit with a massively depleted team back in October, and Houghton appeared to be confident that they could repeat the result again. This time however we had a full squad, and secured another excellent victory to keep our great league run going - now 8 consecutive league victories.
TRFC v EB LIONS The game got off to a slow start with both sides struggling to get into a rhythm. We managed to put some pressure down their left and a throw from Tom landed to Dan who looped the ball through to Gianni, who with a quick turn of pace gave himself half a yard on the defenders and slotted the ball home. GOAL! TODDINGTON 1 – 0 EB LIONS The goal was just what we had needed and suddenly we looked dangerous. Another ball was threaded through only for it be taken off Gianni's toe just as he was about to shoot. EB Lions were no pushover though. One of their attacks was though calmly stopped by Ryan, who shepherded the ball back to Jack. We came straight back at them and Keenan's pace down the right resulted in a corner. Liam's perfectly flighted corner was expertly met by Simon but the ball went just wide. Shortly after though it was Gianni turn to force a corner on the right. Liam once again sent ina dangerous cross, and this time Simon didn't miss with his header. GOAL! TODDINGTON 2 – 0 EB LIONS Our tails were up now. Keenan was sent through but pulled his shot wide. Then the ball popped up just outside of the box for Jordan to shoot just over. A beautiful bit of skill on the left from Tom took him past his man and his cross was met by Keenan. GOAL! TODDINGTON 3 – 0 EB LIONS Our front line were looking at their best, but it was due in part to the strength of the performances being put in from our midfield and defence. Ryan and Nick were gelling superbly in the middle at the back, Lee was holding the right brilliantly and Dan was having a blinder on the left. He sent Gianni clear again only for his cross to go straight across the goal mouth without a connection from anyone. Eddie was on for Liam and nearly scored for his predatory distance (ie one year from the goal!). EB Lions tried to come back into the game, and did force a corner. But they made the mistake of trying to go down the right only to meet the immovable force that is Dan. Our attacks came in quick succession. Simon and Keenan both went close, the latter from a perfectly weighted ball from Sam. Eddie was tormenting them on the wing and his pass to Keenan forced a good save. Tom's corner was scrappily cleared to yield another corner from Gianni. This time the ball was met by Sam at the far post. GOAL! TODDINGTON 4 – 0 EB LIONS HALF-TIME We started the second half as we have finished the first. Gianni surged down the left and his cross was heading towards Liam's boot, but it just didn't drop in time. Mark was on at left back and was timing his interceptions expertly. He sent Sam down the left, who found Simon and his ball through to Keenan unfortunately ended in a scuffed shot. EB Lions strung some good passes together and a dipping shot had to be tipped over by jack at full stretch. Jack was matured massively as a goalkeeper this season and we were glad of it at that moment. But unfortunately the next attack was closed down quick enough and another looping shot from distance went in the left hand corner. GOAL! TODDINGTON 4 – 1 EB LIONS We need to get a grip of the game again quickly, but EB Lions had other ideas and had another shot just go over. All of sudden they seemed to have gained control of the midfield. We had another good chance with Tom 1 on 1 with the keeper, but EB Lions immediately broke back and had a shot just go over. They were struggling to cope with the pace of Keenan and Gianni and it looked as though it was just a matter of time before one of them got in behind their defence. Keenan had a 1 on 1 with keeper saved, but when Gianni was sent down the left, the keeper could only parry the shot towards Keenan who headed the ball home. GOAL! TODDINGTON 5 – 1 EB LIONS Almost immediately Keenan was through again and with just the keeper to beat, he slotted the ball home. GOAL! TODDINGTON 6 – 1 EB LIONS Like a couple of punch drunk boxers, the two sides staggered towards the end, trading blows. EB Lions had a shot saved well by Jack, then Keenan and Nick both went close. END OF THE GAME Special mention goes to Dan, Jordan, Simon and Ryan, but it was a all round strong team performasnce that won the game. MAN OF THE MATCH: Keenan Squad : Jack S ; Dan, Nick, Ryan, Mark W ; Liam, Jordan, Simon, Tom(Capt.) ; Keenan, Gianni ; Gerard, Max, Lee, Sam, Eddie The boys started the match well, although we soon seemed to be giving the Leighton side far too much respect, and we were not winning enough of the challenges all over the pitch. This soon led to a couple of good chances for Leighton which they could not take. A brilliant block in our own box by Dan, seemed to inspire the boys and all of a sudden they all started to battle well and match Leighton. Unfortunately, soon after this we conceded a goal, to a great strike from the Leighton forward. The boy’s heads did not drop though and they kept on mixing it physically with the opposition, with the midfield four of Simon, Jordon, Nick and Gianni having to work very hard and cover a lot of ground, which they did very well. The defenders, Dan, Ryan, Tom, Mark and then Max had settled down well and although Leighton were quick on the break the boys were more than holding there own, and with Liam and Keenan working hard upfront, it was all looking good. A substitution that saw Jack Walsh come on, soon changed the game. A brilliant run down the right from Keenan and cross along the six yard box, saw Jack unmarked at the back post to score and level the match. Almost immediately we nearly scored again with the Leighton keeper making a good save, then his defender clearing it away from the re-bound. A great battling performance saw us go in to half time all square. The second half started with the Leighton management looking worried and realising their team were in real tough match. Thankfully for us Jack Swan was in great form and he started to become very busy, making great save after great save to keep us in the match. A long punt from the keeper cleared all of our defenders and the Leighton forward who was one on one with Jack, scored to put us behind again. Soon after a great save from Jack and then another great penalty save definitely kept us within reach and inspired the boys once again. We pushed on and forced a corner. A good delivery by Liam was flicked on by Keenan at the near post and into the back of the net…..2-2. With only ten minutes left there was talk from the touchline about extra time, but unfortunately on one of there quick breaks, Leighton crossed a ball from the left on to the head of their forward who scored. As we pushed on in the last few minutes, another long punt from the Leighton keeper cleared the defence again, and as with there second goal, Jack stood no chance. It is a great tribute to the boys that the County champions resorted to route 1 long ball to break them down. At the end of the game, the boys came off disappointed in the defeat, which shows how far they have come this season. They had a very proud bunch of parents to clap them off though. Well Done Boys!! Man of the match was Jack Swan who produced a series of great saves, handled the ball brilliantly, commanded his box and spread confidence throughout the team. Squad : Jack S ; Lee, Dan, Ryan, Tom ; Simon, Nick, Jordan(Capt.), Liam ; Gianni, Keenan ; Max, Mark, Jack W After a mammoth 7 week lay off due to Christmas and poor weather, it was straight back in to a top-of-the-table clash against Bedford. And as in the previous match with them, we edged out a thrilling game between two teams giving it their all. With a full squad excluding Gerard, we travelled to Bedfofd hoping that our superb pre-Christmas form would continue. After just 2 minutes it seemed it wasn't going to be the case, as we defended very poorly - having at least 3 chances to clear the ball - before gifting Bedford the opening goal. It took us 10 minutes to get in to our stride, but when we did we started to dominate the game. Gianni came close twice before Nick smashed in a shot from the edge of the box to draw us level. When we took the lead soon afterwards through Liam it seemed that we be ok. However, we made a couple of changes and Bedford twice punished sloppy defending down our left flank to regain the lead. The game was still end-to-end and both teams had chances. Liam sent over a stream of superb corners, and whilst he was taking a rest Nick took over to the same standard, with one finally being met be a flying header by Simon to draw us level just before half time. We returned to our strongest line up for the start of the second half, and we took control of the game. Gianni latched on to a through ball to finish expertly, and when the outstanding Jordan converted a penalty after a clear hand-ball it seemed that the game was ours. We raised our game to an even higher level and scored a superb goal to extend our lead. Jordan to Gianni, Gianni through to Keenan, Keenan with a stunning volley over the goalkeeper in to the roof of the net - probably our best goal of the season so far. Eddie added another shortly afterwards, following up in typical "poacher" style, and although Bedford scored another after more slack defending we comfortably held on for a final score of: BEDFORD FC 4 TRFC 7 So a great result to start the new year with. Some poor defending which needs to be improved on, but many positives. Jack S another faultless performance in goal. Dan and Ryan standing firm in central defence after a slow start, and Tom, in the second half in particular, showing everyone what a great asset he will be for this team, including "tackle of the season" with a maginificent saving tackle to prevent Bedford scoring when the game was level. Up front Gianni and Keenan battled hard against some tough defending, and in midfield Simon and Nick battled well throughout against some quality opponents. Liam had a fine game, delivering superb corners and crosses throughout, and running his full back ragged. All the subs played their part - sorry that some of you had restricted game time this week lads, but the game was very tight. Man of the match went clearly to Jordan for his best performance since joining the team. winning numerous tackles and using the ball intelligently. Overall it was a true team performance of all 16 lads in the squad that won the day. Well done to you all.
Toddington Rovers B v Leighton United B After the excellent team performance in the 9-1 cup win hopes were high that Rovers were on a roll. However, last season’s tight games with Leighton meant that there was no room for complacency. Toddington were playing uphill and against the wind in the first half so it was key to start well. And they did with Keenan and Gianni linking well up front, but the sharpness of last week didn’t quite seem to be there early on. In fact it was Leighton who had the early chances. Max and Ryan both had to be on their toes to prevent an early breakthrough and when a Leighton forward did break through, Jack had to pull off a good save to keep the scores level. Then from a long goal kick from Jack the ball was knocked forward, Gianni ran onto the ball and with a quick run and shot buried the ball in the back of the net. 1-0 to the Rovers. Leighton pressed harder and had a period of pressure. From a corner there was a scramble in the area and Max and Sam both made great goal-line clearances when an equaliser seemed inevitable. In retrospect this was key as it kept the momentum with Toddington. Toddington went right back up the other end and, following a foul on Keenan, Jordan’s free-kick from about 25 yards seemed goal bound (almost a replay from last week) but hit the bar and bounced to safety. It was an end to end game and both sides looked as if they could score but from good midfield link up, where Nick and Jordan were involved, the ball landed at Gianni’s feet. Another run and shot which was almost a replay of the first. 2-0 to the Rovers. The match then entered a phase when the next goal was going to be vital. Toddington looked good going forward – Keenan was proving a handful as usual, Gianni was linking the play well with some good headers and passes, Liam and Simon were effective in winning the ball and working with the ball on the left and right respectively. On at least two occasions Keenan was put through and was stopped only by last ditch tackles by the Leighton defence. The centre of midfield was a tough battle and Jordan and Nick were working hard in the muddy conditions but the Leighton midfield was fast and aggressive. Ryan was putting in another faultless display at sweeper and Dan had to put in a couple of his trade-mark last ditch tackles in order to keep Toddington’s clean sheet. On the flanks Max and Sam added to the heroics of their goal line clearances with solid defending and good use of the ball. After good work on the right hand side by Liam to win a throw-in, Keenan put the ball in the net, but the goal was disallowed after the linesman pointed out that the throw-in had been taken a couple of yards into the pitch. Eddie was introduced onto the right hand side, Mark and Lee came on as full backs and Gerard came on as centre half. The changes were seamless in the defence – with Gerard using his strength and Mark picking up where Max had left off giving the man on the right no chances. On the right, Lee won a couple of early challenges and made good use of the ball putting through probing passes down the channel. Then, after good dribbling skills by Eddie we won a corner. From the ensuing play Gianni got the ball on the edge of the area. Gianni turned and hit a looping shot which looked in but hit the bar – it rebounded to Nick who smacked a right foot volley into the net. 3-0 to the Rovers. Despite the score Leighton still pushed forward. After pressure they won a free-kick and forced a great save from Jack.. Jack Walsh had come on and almost made an immediate impact. A long Jack Swan kick found its way through to him. Jack W took the ball on past a defender and hit a shot from the edge of the area which was forced a good save from the Leighton town goalkeeper. Time was running out for the first half and then from nothing a through ball from Jordan picked out a run from Gianni who nipped in front of the defender and finished well with his right foot (Yes – right foot) to complete his hat-trick – his second in consecutive games. HALFTIME 4-0 to the Rovers. While Toddington had played well in the first half 4-0 did not give credit to Leighton’s competitiveness. But good defending and goalkeeping when needed made sure Leighton did not score. The second half started well for Toddington, now going downhill with the wind. Liam demonstrated good skills– turning his full back inside out. Then in a match of many highlights one of the best pieces of skill. A long ball from midfield just over waist height was controlled instantly by Jack Walsh and in one movement put an inch perfect ball through for Keenan’s run. Keenan took one touch and shot. It was on target but the keeper who had come out to narrow the angle managed to put it round the post. “That was good enough to grace the Premiership” said one of the dads. Then a piece of imagination from Liam. Direct from a goal kick the ball came to Liam and seeing the keeper off his line tried a shot from distance. It bounced about six yards from goal and the bounce just took it onto the post rather than into the goal. Leighton were struggling to get out of their half. Toddington’s defence was coping really well and the midfield were getting on top. Keenan was working hard to get a goal and only a mixture of good goalkeeping and bad luck kept him off the scoresheet. But it was Jack Walsh who scored next. A corner from Liam found its way to the far post where Jack controlled and fired an unstoppable shot into the net. 5-0 to the Rovers. This goal seemed to really knock Leighton and Toddington got even more on top. It was mainly one way traffic after this. More goals came:
Straight from the kick-off Leighton poured forward and after a mazy run Leighton hit a scorching shot from outside the area which hits the bar and bounces to safety. Buoyed by this Leighton have a brief period of play and Ryan is called on to cover at the back with a lot of Toddington’s team further upfield. Normality is soon resumed and more Toddington chances and goals:
FINAL SCORE: Toddington 10 – Leighton 0. As well as being the most goals we have scored this season, it was also our first clean sheet, so a very impressive performance. Given the number of goals this report has focused on them but the match was another all round squad performance. Everyone played their part and a really good team spirit is obvious amongst the team. Man of the match – Gianni Bianco – mainly for his first half hat-trick which put Rovers in charge.
Match Report by Andy Corvesor Sunday 29 November 2009 Leighton were currently running second in the league above us, but after already turning over Caddington from that league in the earlier round of this cup competition and a recent good run of form, we fancied our chances. The day was cold and bright after an absolute downpour the night before. We were playing away at a pitch in Heath & Reach which mercifully was well drained (apart from the area around one corner flag). We had no Lee, Gerard or Mark, but we welcomed Tom to the team for the first time. When the game kicked off, both teams started brightly, but straight away Nick threaded a ball from the midfield straight through the middle and Gianni was able to run on and send the ball just wide. This move turned out to a template for the rest of the game… From the resultant corner, Liam swung the ball in for Gianni to head (yes I sad head!) the ball in. GOAL! LEIGHTON TOWN 0 – 1 TODDINGTON ROVERS Leighton came straight back at us, and they looked an able side. They mounted some pressure and nearly broke through, only for Dan to slide in with a crucial tackle. Their corner was safely dealt with by a strong Simon header. Our midfield settled down well and looked threatening. The ball fell at Nick's feet and from 25 yards he hit the outside of the post… Liam's long throw fell to Keenan who with a smart turn was suddenly free. His shot was pulled just wide. A minute later Keenan was free again on right, this time the keeper pushed the ball round the post with a tidy save. Leighton looked hesitant but occasionally managed to string some passes together. They managed to dissect our defence and their forward was one on one with Jack. He was rounded, but luckily the ball was put over the bar from a tight angle. There was another period of pressure, but again Dan was there to snuffle out the attack. Carrying the captain's armband was having a real effect on him today. Jack's big goal kick dropped to Keenan, one flick and Gianni was again free. Right hand corner, GOAL! LEIGHTON 0 – 2 TODDINGTON ROVERS Leighton once again piled forward determined to pull one back, and had a shot fall just wide. Our defence was looking strong though. Ryan looked rock solid and Tom seemed naturally calm on the ball. Sam was also more than holding his own on the right. Leighton were struggling to deal with Jack's big kicks though and another big one again landed to Keenan, on to Gianni, just wide. But shortly after Keenan was sent clear and rounded the keeper to slot the ball home. GOAL! LEIGHTON 0 – 3 TODDINGTON ROVERS Leighton were working hard to get back into the game, but our midfield were just choking off their game. Simon was having another superb game, and the Nick/Jordan combination looked very dangerous. Liam was terrorising them on the left, as was Eddy when he came on. Leighton were really pushing now to get a goal back before half-time. Dan stopped one attack with a trademark crunching tackle, but shortly after they had a shot hit the crossbar. We held on well though and after a Toddington counter attack ended with a Simon shot just wide, it was half-time. HALF-TIME The team talk was basically to just carry on with the same stuff and team did just that. Immediately after kick off, Eddy raced down the left and he had just the keeper to beat, but unfortunately he had a slightly heavy first touch. However, the keeper clearance rebounded off Eddy and nearly went in the goal! The next attack saw Gianni cross from the left, and Liam's controlled header brought a good save from their keeper. We were piling it on now, and the next attack had Gianni sent clear yet again this time by Liam. His shot was saved for a corner, but from Liam's looping corner Gianni connected with his head (yes his head!) for a GOAL! LEIGHTON 0 – 4 TODDINGTON ROVERS A minute later, Jordan threaded the ball through to Gianni yet again. GOAL! LEIGHTON 0 – 5 TODDINGTON ROVERS That was four to Gianni, so to celebrate the manager immediately brought him off to let someone else have a go! Attempts were coming from everywhere now. We really had our tails up, and the Leighton heads were dropping. After a strong Dan tackle in the corner were he accidentally caught the player with his elbow, we had a bit of a mini fracas with Leighton parents and managers vocalising their opinions of our tackling style! The referee rightly called the tackle as fair and the game continued… Nick had another go from distance and again just missed. Jordan had a go as well, but his shot too fell just wide. Leighton had the occasional chance but they were being well contained. Max had come on and was being as competitive as ever. Jack W was also causing them problems with his pace. We had shots saved from both Gianni and Eddy, before a long Keenan throw fell to Eddy who slotted the ball home in the left hand corner. GOAL! LEIGHTON 0 – 6 TODDINGTON ROVERS Another big Jack kick fell to Keenan who once again turned his man beautifully only for him to be fouled. Jordan stepped up to take the free kick. It was a long one, but not long enough as far as Leighton were concerned. Jordan struck it sweetly and everyone could see the keeper was going to have no chance as it flew into the top right hand corner. GOAL! LEIGHTON 0 – 7 TODDINGTON ROVERS We shortly forced another corner. Liam took it and it was a low curling one towards the near post. It went through several players and after a moment's confusion the linesman flagged it as a goal straight from the corner! GOAL! LEIGHTON 0 – 8 TODDINGTON ROVERS We were really pushing on now, and some gaps were appearing at our back. A Leighton attack was cut out down the left but only for the concession of a free kick. It was taken well and their header towards the goal took a deflection off another Leighton player leaving Jack no chance. GOAL… LEIGHTON 1 – 8 TODDINGTON ROVERS The goal gave Leighton a bit of encouragement and they looked a better side suddenly. But before they could capitalise, Nick had another go from distance. He had spotted the keeper off his line and his looping shot from near the half-way line dropped over the head of the despairing keeper. GOAL! Leighton again came back at us, but it was far too little, far too late. When the referee blew for end of the game, a roar went up from our supporters and the gripes started from their supporters. The facts were though that we simply outplayed and outfought them and were well deserved winners. Man of the match went to Dan for a captain's performance. Squad: Jack S : Sam, Dan, Ryan, Tom : Simon, Nick, Jordan, Liam : Keenan, Gianni : Max, Eddie, Jack W
COMETH THE RAIN COMETH THE MEN!
TODDINGTON 4 -1 LUTON BOROUGH
As adults cowered like sheep under the cover of the trees 16 of Toddington's finest scored a hard fought and deserved victory over Luton on the windswept plains of Stopsley.
Toddington started of brightly playing into a strong headwind with Jordan and Nick playing some nice 1 touch football in midfield. The front 2 of Keenan and Gianni continued a season of terrorising defences without managing to get that final shot in.
Luton then utilised the conditions with a long goal kick and, after a superb save from Jack, Luton B scrambled in a goal to go 1 – 0 up.
The temperature on the touchline rose as Steve and Richards’s frustration started to boil. Daniel, Max and Sam were holding the backline well as Ryan swept up all the high balls raining down on the back line. Then a piece of Lincolnshire magic. Nick skipped around 3 players and as the experts on the line screamed at him to lay it off he swept it into the bottom corner 1 -1.
The boys were growing in confidence with Liam and Simon working hard to win the ball in torrid conditions. Jack Walsh entered the fray and after managing to miss from 5ft ( to the delight of John £10 saved!) gave a brilliant assist to Keenan who thumped in to make it 2 – 1. The rest of the damp boys came on with Gerard making some important interceptions and Mark and Eddie raiding down the wings. Lee was solid as usual and you could sense Luton were looking forward to the second half less than the sheep under the trees!
After plenty of encouragement the boys started to play some nice football. After some of our usual frustrating misses we finally managed to seal the game with 2 lovely goals from Simon and Jack Walsh. The match report got shorter as the paper got wetter so a few mentions after a famous 4 – 1 victory:
Squad : Jack S : Max, Dan, Ryan, Sam : Simon, Nick, Jordan, Liam : Keenan, Gianni : Lee, Mark W, Gerard, Eddie, Jack W TOP OF THE LEAGUE!
TRFC V BEDFORD FC "B" The lads carried on where they left off last week, securing an excellent victory in a superb game of football against a team coming in to the game with a 100% record. Dan was back, but we started with the same 11 that started last week, and again we began well on a bright and breezy morning, in front of our best crowd of the season. Squad : Jack S : Lee, Jordan, Ryan, Mark W : Liam, Simon, Nick, Eddie : Keenan, Gianni : Gerard, Max, Dan, Sam, Jack W EB LIONS V TRFC A stunning opening 10 minutes of attacking football set us up for the best win of the season so far, against the league leaders EB Lions who came in to the game with a 100% record. The news before the game was mixed. Nick was available for the first time since re-signing, and Liam and Jordan both returned after missing the last 2 weeks. However, Dan was missing and Connor faces a lengthy absence after breaking his arm at school - get well soon. Missing both centre backs meant a major reshuffle, with Lee moving to right back, Jordan stepping in at centre half and Ryan playing sweeper. In spite of the changes we started superbly, and within 10 minutes were 3-0 up. Keenan scored twice and Eddie netted in to the top corner from outside the box. The goals were no more than we deserved, as we ripped their defence apart time after time. EB gradually got their game together and the rest of the half was fairly even. Both teams created half chances in an end-to-end game, and 5 minutes before half time they pulled one back to leave the half-time score EB LIONS 1 TRFC 3 We knew that EB would attack strongly in the second half, and so it transpired. In previous weeks we may have wilted, but not today. Lee and Mark were solid at full backs - Lee in particular having his best game so far for us - and when they were rested Gerard and Max filled in well, particularly as they were strong down the flanks. Ryan looked at home at sweeper, making a series of fine tackles, and Jordan made a huge difference to us at centre half. Liam, Eddie and Sam shared the duties down the wings, with Nick and Simon both outstanding in central midfield. Up front we continued to look dangerous, with the pace of Keenan and Gianni, supported by Jack W when on the pitch, causing the EB defence lots of problems. It was Gianni who added to our lead halfway through the second half, with a superb volley in to the bottom corner. The rest of the game was more of the same - two strong teams giving it their all. At the end the final score was EB LIONS 1 TRFC 4 More than anything else, an excellent game of football. We started so well, and then really dug in when needed. It was great to see Nick back in a TRFC shirt, but there were many excellent performances. Jack S, Jordan, Lee, Ryan and Simon were all excelllent, but Man of the Match went to Keenan for a superb performance resulting in 2 fine goals (we won't mention the missed penalty in the second half!). More than anything else, the game showed what we can achieve when we have our full squad available - it was a real team effort to secure a great result. Well done lads !
TRFC V BARTON ROVERS In atrocious conditions, the lads got back to winning ways, but managed to make very hard work of it !! Another week of unavailability and drop outs left us with 12 players on a wet and windy morning, but all of the lads who did play can be proud of their efforts. If we hadn't contrived to miss a hatful of chances we would have won comfortably, but in the end we were holding on. Playing down the slope and with the wind in our favour in the first half, we started strongly and Keenan put us ahead by calmly rounding the keeper and slotting home. Barton's threat came through their excellent centre forward, who proved a real handful for Dan and Gerard. Whilst we dominated and created (and missed !) a stack of chances Barton were dangerous on the break and created a number of half-chances of their own. We added a second before half time - Gianni latching on to a long kick from Jack S to calmly lob the keeper - but we should have been out of sight as we turned round and had the conditions against us for the second half. We continued to create chances but lacked the finish, and sure enough a deflected clearance fell to the Barton centre forward who calmly finished to bring them right back in to the game. Almost immediately Sam T showed his colleagues the way with an excellent finish for his fourth goal of the season. Five minutes from the end we left a Barton player completely unmarked from a corner and he scored, and we spent the rest of the match defending valiantly, including a string of corners in the last few minutes. FINAL SCORE - TRFC 3 BARTON ROVERS 2 A lot of good performances. Jack S again faultless in goal, Max putting in his best performance of the season as stand-in right back, Dan battling well against their outstanding player - particularly in the second half, Ryan as committed as ever, especially effective when moved to sweeper in the second half, and Keenan working tirelessly down the right hand side. Sam also had a good game, using the ball well and taking his chance well, but MOM went to Mark for another solid performance at left back. So good to win, but with games against the top two teams coming up in the next two weeks - both with 100% records and scoring goals for fun - we must improve significantly to compete. Full credit to the lads who played, but we need to get our core players playing more often. For the last 3 games we have been short every week and it has shown. We are delighted that Nick has re-signed for us - hopefully he will be available for next week. His, and his dad's, level of commitment by travelling down from Lincoln, is a lesson to all and can only benefit the team. HOUGHTON REGIS YOUTH V TRFC Decimated by illness and non-availability, we suffered our first league defeat of the season. We only had 11 players, including Lee, Eddie and Mark who has been off school and were not 100%. Having said that it was only in the last 10 minutes that we ran out of puff and conceded late goals. With key players Jordan, Liam and Keenan all missing it gave some of the lads who don't always play full games their chance. Every player gave their all, but at the end of the day the extra bit of quality that those 3 lads offer was sorely missed. The first half was goal-less, with Houghton playing with the wind but our defence standing firm and chances minimal for both teams. Gianni looked by far the most dangerous forward on the pitch, but he was having to do all the work for himself as we created little from the flanks. We fell behind 10 minutes in to the second half after a cross from the Houghton left was bundled in. We lifted our game, and 10 minutes later Lee scored from the edge of the box with a good finish - captain for the day against his old team, his goal celebration was much enjoyed, especially by Lee himself and his mum !! Gradually tired legs set in, and 10 minutes from the end Houghton scrambled in another goal very similar to their first. With nothing to lose, we pushed Connor forward from his sweeper position, and whilst it gave us more power and pace when attacking it left us exposed at the back, and Houghton scored twice more to give a final score of HOUGHTON 4 TRFC 1. The final result flattered Houghton, but they were a decent team who were stronger and more competitive than us in the final quarter of the match. However all of the boys can be proud of their efforts on a very difficult day. There were some excellent performances. Jack S continued his excellent form in goal and was blameless for any of the goals conceded, Dan and Connor were solid in central defence with Dan continuing to grow in to the role in a new position for him. Gianni was back to his best and on another day would have scored at least one goal, but man of the match went to Simon, head and shoulders above any other player on the pitch with an inspirational performance which did not deserve to end in defeat. So after an excellent start to the season 2 consecutive defeats, heavily influenced by player unavailability. The boys have got to show real character over the coming weeks to get their season back on track, both in levels of commitment and also playing good football. The one highlight of the day was to see Nick Hill on the touchline. Nick is signing on for us and will play whenever he can get down from Lincoln - what a difference you would have made today Nick !! Good to see you. Squad : Jack S : Ryan, Dan, Connor, Mark W : Eddie, Lee, Simon, Sam : Gianni, Jack W
BRICKHILL WANDERERS V TRFC - COUNTY CUP Round 2 We should have known it was going to be "one of those days" with both centre halfs - Dan and Gerard - being ill and a no-show from Jack W. Jordan had to fill in at centre half - his influence in midfield was missed massively but we had few other options, particularly with Lee struggling with injury. For the first 20 minutes we were excellent. Sam scored his customary goal with a cool finish on the far post, and then Liam doubled our lead from the penalty spot. On another day we would have scored a hat ful, with Gianni and Keenan going close on numerous occasions but it just didn't happen. Brickhill - going well in a division above us - were skilful and strong on the flanks and caused our full-backs problems throughout. Our poor defending made things worse, and we were punished when we failed to clear and they pulled a goal back. We continued to attack, and Keenan scored with a tidy finish to give us back our 2 goal cushion. Brickhill then scored again with a carbon copy of their first goal to leave the half-time score BRICKHILL 2 TRFC 3. Brickhill - playing with the slope - started the second half strongly and put us under immediate pressure. Jordan and Connor held firm in central defence, but we were not controlling midfield and Jack S had to be on his toes with a number of saves and interceptions. The full backs, already stretched, were being over-run with Brickhill players breaking forward and not being picked up by our midfield. In spite of this, Liam won a free kick on the right-hand side, took it himself and sent a superb shot in to the top corner to increase our lead and it looked as if we might hold on. However, our failings of the first half returned, and we conceded again. Again we didn't clear the ball properly and they scored. We then conceded a "dodgy" penalty, and finally, 3 minutes before the end we scuffed a clearance and their forward went on to finish and give them the lead for the first time in the match. Even then we had chances, with Mark storming forward, playing a 1-2 with Gianni but firing wide, and Eddie almost finding the space to get in a shot. FINAL SCORE - BRICKHILL 5 TRFC 4 So, very disappointing in light of the first half performance. The Brickhill manager admitted that the game should have been over at half time. However, the boys need to learn two main lessons from today. Firstly, we have moved up a level in terms of opposition, and you have to take your chances - Brickhill had less than half as many shots as we did but ended up winning. Secondly we have to defend better and clear the ball - we gifted them 4 of their 5 goals. A mention for Gianni and Lee, who both battled on despite being less than fit. Liam scored 2 more, making it 6 in his last 3 games from midfield, and Eddie showed glimpes of the skill we all know he has. The good thing is that it was a cup game, so we can look forward to improvements when we're back to league action next week. As we said at the start, "one of those days !!"
Squad : Jack S : Ryan, Jordan, Connor, Mark W : Liam, Lee, Simon, Sam : Gianni, Keenan : Max, Eddie CADDINGTON V TRFC - LEAGUE CUP A tough prospect was in store today, with a visit to the team top of the division above us, with a 100% record. The lads responded in style with an excellent performance to secure victory and maintain their excellent start to the season. Caddington were useful - skilful down the flanks and very quick on the break. The first half was very even as Caddington attacked down the slope. The second half was dominated by us, playing some superb football and using the flanks to open up the home defence. Sam scored our first goal, Liam added two, and further goals were scored by Connor and Eddie as we went on to win 5-3. There were many excellent performances. Jack S continued to be solid in goal, Connor is rapidly becoming an outstanding sweeper, Mark W had his best game for a long time with solid defending and surging runs forward, Liam scored two more excellent goals to clearly be our top scorer, and Jordan made a huge difference again in the middle of the park. However, man of the match went to Ryan for an outstanding captains performance, never shirking or losing a tackle and playing in several different positions throughout the match. All of the lads deserve praise - the second half was the best performance by this team for a very long time - well done to all of you. Team : Jack S; Ryan, Dan, Connor, Mark W; Liam, Jordan, Simon, Sam; Keenan,Gianni. Gerard,Max,Eddie,Jack W
TRFC V LUTON BOROUGH After a credible opening day draw, the lads gained their first league victory of the season against Luton Borough. On a bright, sunny morning the team was missing Jack Walsh and also their new signing Jordan Fender, not eligible to play until next week. Otherwise they were at full strength. Playing down the slope in the first half we started brightly, Sam coming close to giving us the lead in the first few minutes. After 10 minutes an excellent free-kick from Connor found it's way to Sam again, and this time he finished in style to give us the lead. However, Borough reacted with determination and got back in to the game. Their goalkeepers long kicks were causing chaos, mainly due to our inability to attack the balls in the air. We were hugely indebted to Simon for a superb Captains performance, winning tackles and covering every blade of grass. Whilst we were still creating chances, our defensive fraility made us open to an equaliser, but we held off and reached Half-Time TRFC 1 LUTON BOROUGH 0 The second half was a different story, with the lads upping their game and dominating throughout. Liam converted a penalty after ten minutes, and the goal gave both him and the whole team great confidence. Further goals were added through Liam(again), Gianni and Keenan. In between Borough pulled a goal back, with their striker following up his own penalty after an excellent save by Jack. Cup action next week against a team from a higher division with a 100% record. So a real test, but if we tighten up a little defensively we've got nothing to fear. TRY FC U13B v Flamstead Match report by CARM BIANCO 13 September 2009
Another season starts. Newly promoted Toddington have some new faces Lee Green, Keenan McGann George and Ryan Callanan and the home crowd were eagerly anticipating how this new formation would fare. Many of the boys had had a summer growth spurt but when Flamstead arrived they looked the bigger side.
There was a strong wind blowing uphill and Toddington were playing against it in the first half.
The match started evenly with both sides battling for control, but within 10 minutes Toddington took the lead. Lee won the ball in midfield and found Gianni who combined well with Keenan who slipped through an excellent return pass for Gianni to run onto and give Toddington the lead with a good right foot finish.
Toddington 1 – Flamstead 0
After the goal Flamstead upped their efforts and with the help of the wind dominated much of the remainder of the half. Jack Swan was seeing lots of action in the Toddington goal and had to pull off a string of saves to keep Toddington in the lead, the pick of these being a save from a swerving free-kick.
Flamstead kept going forward and after their striker blasted over the top when it looked easier to score, they equalised through an attack down Toddington left hand side.
Toddington 1 – Flamstead 1
Following the goal Toddington made a tactical reshuffle with Lee pushed in the centre of midfield and this helped break up some of Flamstead’s play and bring Toddington back into the match. The match was fairly even for the rest of the half with both sides having chances. Toddington’s best chances came from a cross from the right and following a scramble in the box Eddie’ shot was well saved and shortly afterwards good link up play down the left between Simon and Eddie produced a through ball that just eluded both Gianni and Keenan. At the other end Jack Swan was kept busy and had to make a couple of good saves before half time.
HALF TIME: Toddington 1 – Flamstead 1. Fairly even but Flamstead edged it.
With the wind in their favour in the second half Toddington started brightly. A chance soon came after Keenan headed onto Simon, his header on found Jack Walsh whose shot went agonisingly wide of the left hand post. At the other end Jack Swan snuffed out another Flamstead attack.
But Toddington were getting on top and a number of chances came their way: - Lee’s pass found Ryan but his shot was saved - Liam found Gianni with a pass to the edge of the area but Gianni’s shot was also saved - A cross from the left was stopped by a Flamstead hand – PENALTY.
After discussion about who was going to take it, Keenan stepped up and hit a good penalty high and to the right, but unfortunately, with the goalkeeper beaten, it hit the bar and rebounded to safety.
More chance came as Toddington pressed: Connor stepped up from his sweeper position more often and put Toddington on the attack; Ryan had a snap shot; Simon, Liam and Keenan combined well, Gianni had a shot charged down but the goal would not come.
At the other end the defence and Jack Swan had to be vigilant as Flamstead broke with speed and accuracy. The defence played well with Connor, Daniel, Gerard, Mark, Max and Sam all marking well and tackling hard, often against boys who were physically much bigger, and when Flamstead did get a shot in or a long pass strayed into the area Jack Swan was there to tidy things up.
In the final few minutes Toddington could have won it. A throw-in from the right was headed on by Keenan into the area. Ryan had ghosted in and found some space in the area but his volley went just wide of the right hand post.
FINAL SCORE: Toddington 1 – Flamstead 1
A good start to the season and probably a fair result on the whole game although Toddington came on strong in the second half.
Man of the match – Jack Swan |
